What's happening in October?

October is here, and our word for the month is busy! Our Assistant Director, Billie Bowman, has worked hard to pack this month with several different fall programs. These are going to be so fun, and I, personally, am so excited!

Lego Challenge

For the entire month of October, participants ages 12 & under can compete in a Lego Competition. All entries must be completed in the library using library Legos and must fit inside the provided dimensions. Creations will be displayed at the library they are created, and each location will have a first place winner selected by judges. Winners will receive a prize! This is available all month long at the Blytheville, Keiser, Leachville, Osceola, and Wilson Public Libraries. This event is only available at the Manila Public Library until October 7th, the date of the Manila Chili Cook Off.

Teen After Hours

One of the programs is the kick-off to our new Teen After Hours events. Bi-monthly, we will welcome the teens of Mississippi County to join us at a different library location after the library has closed for the day. We are starting off at the Blytheville Public Library on October 23 from 5-7pm. Teens are invited to join us for s’mores, ghost stories, yard games, and more. We are looking forward to a fun filled evening! This is the event I am anticipating the most, especially since there will be s'mores... who doesn't love roasted marshmallows?

Creepy Crawlers

4-H Kamella Neeley will be joining us for a series of Creepy Crawlers events. She will bring a variety of insects including hissing cockroaches to these programs. The dates, times, and locations of these are as follows:

October 19 @3:00pm Osceola Public Library

October 26 @10:00am Blytheville Public Library

October 26 @3:30pm Manila Public Library

October 31 @9:00am Wilson Public Library

Halloween Mask Designing

Amid Creepy Crawler fun, we will also do a Halloween Mask Designing program at each of our 6 locations. At this event, we will provide blank masks and materials to design the mask however participants want. The masks could possibly even be cut to a desired shape. The dates and times for these are as follows:

Manila Public Library- October 10 @4:00pm

Keiser Public Library- October 16 @4:30pm

Blytheville Public Library- October 17 @4:00 With a special guest, Blytheville Bones

Osceola Public Library- October 19, Mask Designing will begin directly after the Creepy Crawlers event mentioned above

Leachville Public Library- October 20 @10:30am

Wilson Public Library- October 20 Drop-In from 4-5pm

New STEM Challenge!

At each location, you can also find the STEM Challenge for October. This kit consists of a piece of pool noodle and materials to turn the pool noodle into a monster. Be creative with this craft, the sillier, the better! As always, when you finish your STEM Challenge, we would love to see the final result! Post a picture on social media and tag us so we can see and share!

National What Month?

And while we’re talking about October- it's National Cookbook Month! Within our county-wide system, we offer a variety of cookbooks, baking pans, and a Spice Collection at the Manila Public Library. Download the Librista app to search our entire cookbook catalog.

If there is a certain title available at a location which is not local to you, create a request and our courier will deliver it to your default location! This is the perfect time to find your new favorite fall recipe, take advantage of our spice collection, and enjoy all the perks of your FREE library card!
